When Should You Use Google SMTP?

Google SMTP works well for:

  • Low email volume

  • Internal or manual emails

  • Testing your email setup

⚠️ Important:
If you plan to send more than ~50 emails per day, we do NOT recommend Google SMTP. See the recommendation at the bottom.

Step-by-Step: Google Workspace SMTP Setup

1. Open SMTP Settings in FitMetrics

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Open Email Templates

  3. Click SMTP Configuration

  4. Enable Use Custom SMTP Server

2. Enter Google SMTP Details

Use the following settings:

  • SMTP Host:

    smtp.gmail.com
  • Port:

    587

(If this fails later, use 465)

  • Encryption:

    • Start with TLS

    • If using port 465 β†’ SSL

  • Username:
    Your full Google Workspace email
    (example: [email protected])

3. Generate a Google App Password (Required)

Google does not allow using your normal password.

You must generate an App Password.

How to generate it:

  1. Log in to your Google Workspace account

  2. Go to Google Account Settings

  3. Search for App Passwords

  4. Make sure 2-Step Verification is enabled

  5. Create a new App Password

    • Name it: FitMetrics

  6. Copy the generated password

4. Paste App Password into FitMetrics

  • Password: Paste the App Password (not your Gmail password)

  • From Email:
    Example:

  • From Name:
    Your business name

Click Save

5. Test the Connection

  1. Click Test Connection

  2. Send the test email to an address you own

  3. Confirm the email arrives

❌ If Test Fails

If the test fails:

  1. Change Port to:

    465
  2. Switch encryption to SSL

  3. Click Save

  4. Test again

βœ… Port 465 + SSL works best for most Google accounts.

βœ… Final Working Settings (Most Reliable)

  • SMTP Host: smtp.gmail.com

  • Port: 465

  • Encryption: SSL

  • Username: Your Google Workspace email

  • Password: App Password (not your real password)

⚠️ Important Limitations of Google SMTP

Google SMTP has serious limitations:

  • ❌ No email delivery logs

  • ❌ No open / bounce tracking

  • ❌ Strict daily sending limits

  • ❌ Not reliable for automation

  • ❌ Not suitable for onboarding, forms, or notifications at scale

βœ… Recommended Alternative: RESEND (Strongly Advised)

We strongly recommend using Resend instead of Google SMTP if you:

  • Send more than 50 emails/day

  • Use AI Forms

  • Use Automations

  • Send onboarding or portal emails

  • Want full email logs and visibility

Why Resend is Better:

  • πŸ“Š Full email delivery history

  • πŸ” Logs, errors, bounces

  • πŸš€ Built for transactional emails

  • πŸ” More reliable and scalable

  • πŸ’Ό Designed for SaaS platforms like FitMetrics

Google SMTP is fine for testing β€” Resend is built for production.

Summary

  • Google SMTP requires App Passwords

  • Enable 2FA in Google Workspace

  • Use Port 465 + SSL if 587 fails

  • Works for low volume only

  • Resend is the recommended solution for real usage
